The Blues 2006
Thornhill U8's Blues - 2006

News / Information (All kick offs 10.30am unless stated):-
17th March 2007:-
Two wins with a draw sandwiched in between! But more importantly some great team play! The Blues played Marshfield first and won comfortably 3-1, a good strike from Kieran Harris gave the blues a first half lead and then the Blues 100th goal of the season came from the opposition as Chris Frost’s pass was intercepted by the Marshfield defender as Joshua De Leeuw van Weenen was going to shoot! Ben Hooper scored the third before Marshfield got one back. In the next game the Blues dominated again against Marlboro Red’s but couldn’t score, as they peppered the Red’s goal with numerous attempts. In the last game the Blues played really well against St Albans with some great interplay and would have scored a hat full if it wasn’t for the St Alban’s goalie being on top form! The Blues had to wait for the final seconds of the first half to score, as a great corner from Owen Jones found Sam Fenton at the back post to control and tap in! The Blues continued to dominate in the second half and a great pass from Matt Yeung put Owen Jones in space to dribble past two players before placing in the corner! Overall today, there was some brilliant passing and team play. And the cherry on the cake was that a further 3 of the squad (along with Owen who has been playing with RCT group at Treforest) have been invited to train with Cardiff City Academy, well done to Matt Yeung, Sam Fenton and Lewys Sweet. Well done to everyone today as these boys can’t shine without the rest of team playing their part too!!!
10th March 2007:-
Bright skies and a perfect playing surface at the Marl saw the boys win all three games and not concede a goal. Matt Yeung scored a fantastic goal in the first half, smashing the ball in the top hand corner, as the Blues went close on numerous occasions against Pentrych Red. In the second half Chris Frost picked the ball up wide on the left and then proceeded to curl it round the on coming keeper, to give the Blues a well deserved victory 2-0. In the second game the Blues played a new team to the age group STAR FC, who played exceptionally well considering their lack of experience. If Matt Yeung’s goal in the last game was a cracker, his next one was even better, WHAT a screamer! and almost from the same position! Even the opposition supporters applauded. The Blues dominated the game and Keiran Harris had an easy tap in to make it 2-0 at half time. The Blues continued to make opportunities and Chris Frost and Matt Yeung scored goals in the second half to make a 4-0 win. In the last game it was more competitive against Grangetown Clarets and the Blues scored a fantastic goal to make the difference! Lewys Sweet picked the ball up in midfield after Sam Baker had won the ball in midfield. Lewys then played the perfect pass diagonally into the path of Keiran Harris, splitting the Grangetown defence. Keiran controlled the ball on the run before placing in the corner of goal. Grangetown did well to stop further goals, especially in the second half where their goal keeper pulled off some fine saves. Excellent passing boys and tracking back in midfield to help the defence! FAB!
3rd March 2007:-
Despite heavy rain the night before the pitches at Moorland Road were fairly good, with only a little bit of surface water. The Blues despite missing 3 of their 4 best players today played really well and were more than competitive in all the games resulting in a draw, a win and a loss. The first game was a competitive game against Radyr, which ended up in a nil-nil draw. The Radyr team having most of the game in both half’s without either team having any real chances on goal. The second game against St Albans was a thriller, as the Blues took the lead with two first half goals from Lewys Sweet and Chris Frost. The Blues had the better of the first half but the second half was a different story! Although the game was end to end St Albans had the majority of the game! Especially, catching the Blues on the break on numerous occasions! Only for Chris Frost and Adam Thomas in defence to save the day, including a goal line clearance! In the end St Albans got a goal back and that meant that there were a nervous last couple of minutes for the Blues!! The last game against Grangetown Blues ended up in a last one nil loss, after a breakaway goal in the last few seconds! But the game was marred by the late tackling (being kind…) of the Grangetown team! Well done boys for not retaliating!!
17th February 2007:-
Only 9 players available meant everyone had lots of games and some tired legs!! The Blues first game was against Maindy Red and like the previous game the teams are well matched. Some great crosses from the Maindy team in the first half and luckily for the Blues they were not met at the other end! In the second half Jacob Knight ran onto a great pass, protecting the ball from the defender before placing it in the corner to make it 1-0. The second game was against Marlboro Whites, who ran out one – nil winners after a great long range strike giving Matt Yeung no chance in goal and they repeated this only for Matt to get to the ball at full stretch. The Blues played some good football and had some chances themselves, best of which hit the side netting! In the last game against Llanderyn Bull Dogs using their full squad of 16 (Splitting up in two teams for the next set of fixtures), the Blues got off to a great start with an early goal from Sam Baker, which was then followed up by a stunner from Matt Yeung. In the second half the Blues went 3-0 up after a great team goal. Dan Jenkins’s heading on from Jacob Knight’s throw-in to Bryn Thomas, who controlled the ball well and laid it off to Kieran Harris who had time to pick his spot! Well played lads!
2nd February 2007:-
Great defence and determination by the Blues in all the games, not a lot of passing though! All three games were end to end with no team dominating. The first game was the local derby against Thornhill Whites, who played extremely well and deserved something from the game but in the end the Blues ended up one nil winners due to Sam Baker’s hard work, which eventually led to the ball breaking free for Chris Frost to stroke the ball home. In the 2nd game Heath Park Rangers played well, especially in the second half were they dominated looking to draw level after Joshua de Leeuw van Weenen had put the Blues ahead in the first half. This was Josh’s first goal of the season and very well deserved, as he reacted first to ball in a goal mouth melee! (14 out of 15 in the squad have now scored this season). The Blues made it a hat trick of one-nil wins by beating Maindy Red with an excellent individual goal from Owen Jones. A lovely heal flick from a throw in, still left him with a lot to do but a fantastic curler at the near post gave the goalie no chance!! Well done boys, more passing next week please!! No Owen for a while now, as the next day he broke his collar bone playing rugby the next day in a brave tackle, speedy recovery OJ!
26th January 2007:-
Just beautiful!! Brilliant passing and great movement from the Boys from Madridl! The boys played some fantastic football winning 4–0 against Eglwys Newydd Blue, 1-0 against Llanishen Dons and 1-0 against the Rumney Whites team. Right from the start boys playing in their white strip played like Real Madrid knocking the ball around the field leaving the opposition chasing shadows. Jacob Knight finished off a great passing movement in the first half, with a first time strike after a passing move that had started off by Sam Baker in defence. Further goals were scored by Leyws Sweet, Ben Hooper and Matt Yeung in the second half but the whole team passed extremely well! Next up were the Dons, which was always going to be a hard fought game, with little to choose between the teams. Both teams like to pass the ball and create goal scoring chances but good defending by all the players meant there was little opportunity to score through out the game. The Blues had the advantage of the slope in the first half and despite dominating in the first period the Blues had problems breaking down the Llanishen defence for a clear cut chance. A well worked free kick between Matt Yeung and Owen Jones, led to a good ball being played into area and with the goalkeeper unable to take it first time, the ball bobbled around until it fell to Kieran Harris, who calmly slotted the ball into the back of the net! The second half the Dons had the slope and the whole team worked their socks to stop the Dons having any chances and still continued to keep the Dons defence to be on their guard. The last game against Rumney Whites, both teams had their chances and Owen Jones had a telling impact on the game, with a terrific save in the first half and then came on for the last two minutes to score the only goal! Well done boys fantastic passing!!!!
16th December 2006:-
Nearly a full house at the Court Field! Nine different goal scorers out the ten members of the squad available on the day! A new management team for the weekend got the Blues their first full set of wins for the season. Highlights of the day being Adam Thomas’s first ever goal (13 of the 15 squad members have now scored this season) and Sam Fenton’s headed goal (another first for the Blues)!! In particular the boys pitch invasion to congratulate Adam on scoring!! Wins were: 4-0 against Lisvane Red (Lewys Sweet, Owen Jones, Matt Yeung and Jacob Knight), 7-0 against Eglwys Newydd Blue (Adam Thomas, Kieran Harris, Owen Jones, Sam Fenton, Jac Skuse and 2 for Lewys Sweet) and 3-0 in the last game against Heath Park Rangers (Chris Frost and two for Sam Fenton). Have a great Christmas boys, hope F C brings you all Spurs shirts!
2nd December 2006:-
Wet weather has meant the boys hadn’t kicked a ball for a while and it showed for the first half of the game. Although the Blues controlled the first half against Maindy Whites there was little goal mouth action. The second half brought a little more action in front of goal, with Owen Jones scoring a great goal. The Blues looked to get the second! But the Maindy team put some good passing together to catch the Blues on the break and a great cross ended in the Maindy forward and Blues defender going for the ball at the same time, resulting in the ball trickling over the goal line, past the goalie. The Blues continued their search for the winner but didn’t get it and the game ended up in a one all draw. In the second game, the Blues played the Rumney Blues. The last two encounters had ended in exciting draws. The Rumney team had improved considerably since last year and both teams went looking for the win. Rumney opened the scoring with a good goal on the break in the middle of the second half. The Blues didn’t panic and continued with their passing. Jacob Knight then got the ball on the right and threaded a good pass through to Jac Skuse, who then smashed the ball in to make it one-one. Owen Jones and Sam Fenton then combined well in midfield before laying off a prefect pass to Lewys Sweet, who ran towards the goal before calmly placing the ball pass the goal keeper. To give Thornhill a 2-1 win. The last game was against Heol Hir Black, the boys playing school mates and also some family connections! The Blacks had earlier in the season had beaten the Blues 4-0 in a friendly, so the Blues came out strong and despite controlling the game had to wait until the final seconds of the first half to score a goal. Owen Jones picking the ball up from a throwing jinked past a few players before blasting it, giving the goalie no chance. The second half was much the same and Sam Fenton threaded some great balls through to the attacker only for the Blacks goalkeeper to save well. Adam Thomas played really well on the left hand side of midfield tackling and passing well! Well done to all the boys, Mars bars all round!!!!
17th November 2006:-
Friday – Ninian Park (Cardiff V QPR) The Blues enjoy the experience of playing in front of a 16 thousand plus crowd and floodlights at Ninian Park! Playing in the half time interval, the Blues score four goals keeping the crowd warm and entertained! Some great goals and saves! A special thanks to all the goalkeepers! Well done boys, you did yourselves proud!
11th November 2006:-
2 Losses and one win for Blues. All 15 of the squad were present this weekend and they all played equal amounts! So lots of changes throughout! The boys played extremely well in the first game against the Urdd losing 1-0. The team passed well and sometimes over passed the ball rather than shooting! In the end, a great move and shot was the difference between the two teams in the end! Great game! The second game was against Rumney Whites; the Blues dominated the first half hitting the post, bar and also had a few goal mouth scrambles without the ball crossing the line. The second half it was much the same, until Ben Hooper scrambled the ball home to give the Blues the lead. Ben Hooper then scored another after some good passing. Sam Fenton then went on a fantastic solo run! Beating five of the Rumney players and although tackled a couple! His determination got him to the goalkeeper eventaully, only for the goalie to parry his shot and leavea simple tap in for Jacob Knight! The last goal was again due to Sam Fenton’s determination, not letting the ball go for a goal kick; he laid off a pass to Sam Baker, for him to score the Blues forth and his first of the season (that’s 12 of the squad now to score!). 4-0 to the Blues. In the last game the Marlboro Black came out strong and they passed the ball well and scored a fantastic opener mid way through the first half! They then scored a second after a goal mouth scramble. The Blues did come close but had their backs against the wall for most of the first half. In the second the Blues had a lot more of the ball but couldn’t get past the Blacks defence and in the end they scored another on the break, with a well taken goal! 3-0 to the Marlboro Blacks
4th November 2006:-
A full set for the Blues as they draw, win and lose against Rumney Blues, Canton Rangers and Fairwater respectively. The Blues were missing 6 of their squad through various reasons, so the boys were shattered by the end of the games! First up were the hosts Rumney Blues who scored the first goal early on only for the Blues to fight back with a great strike from Jacob Knight and then take the lead through Dan Jenkins. Dan scored his first goal of the season after a good bit of control before smashing the ball into the goal! He became the “11th” player to score this year out of the squad of 15! The Rumney team continued to attack and got another goal to make the score 2-2 after some fine pay by their twin strike force! And all of this in the first half! The second half continued in the same vein but with no goals!! Next up were Canton, and like the previous game it was end to end! Canton took the lead, but Owen Jones took the game by the scruff of the neck and scored two fine goals to give the Blues the lead. The Canton team then scored another to make it 2-2, again all in the first half. In the second half both teams had their chances but a good bit of passing left Jacob Knight in space to score the winner. 3-2 to the Blues. The last game was against the strong Fairwater team; the Blues played well and defended like Trojans but couldn’t stop Fairwater taking a first half lead. The Blues continued to look for equaliser going close a couple of times only for Fairwater to deservedly score another goal. 0-2 to Fairwater. Great effort boys!
28th October 2006:-
2 wins and a loss for the Blues! The Blues lost their first game of the day to Marlboro Black One nil. Both teams made light of the slippery muddy conditions in an exciting end to end game, with a lot of chances for both teams! The Blues played well and put the Marlboro team under a lot of pressure and even when they got the ball passed the goalkeeper there were two defenders to get the ball away! Well done to both teams great game! Next up were the home team Lisvane Orange, which the Blues won two – one but this hides the determination and bad luck of the Oranges! The Blues took the lead through Owen Jones in the first half as the Blues shaded the half. In the second half the Oranges came out strong and dominated the game, scoring one and should have scored another one or three. The Blues defended well and after yet another goal mouth mêlée the Blues went on the counter attack through Chis Frost. Following up his first shot, Chris calmly placed the ball in the corner of the goal to give the Blues a win! The last game was against the Marlboro Reds and although both teams had chances to score the Blues dominated in a two nil win! Jac Skuse opened up the scoring with one of his specials chipping the goalie from 15 yards. In the second half the Blues had numerous chances on goal and finally Kieran Harris smashed in a half volley after some great passing especially from Matt Yeung! Well done again great effort in defence as well as attack!
27th October 2006 Cardiff City:-
Owen Jones makes his Cardiff City debut against the Newport Brazilian Football Academy. Playing on the right in the 2nd quarter scored, he scores Cardiff’s second goal in a tight opening three quarters! Owen played well throughout and no one would have noticed he was left footed using both feet to pass and shoot! He showed great skill and positional sense, well done Owen from all your team mates.
21st October 2006:-
Ditto….2 wins and a draw for the Thornhill Blues again! But score lines don’t always tell the full story. The Boys from Brazil played a 100% better this weekend, starting off with a nil – nil draw against the strong Lisvane Black team. The Blues battled well and slighted shaded the first half with the slope in their favour, without causing the goalkeeper any major problems. In the second half, the Lisvane Blacks had the majority of the game and both teams had chances to score. The Blacks created a great opportunity in the dying seconds only for Chris Frost to produce a fine save. Nil – Nil a great game well done to both sides. Next up were Lisvane Red, and they battled well and their goalkeeper made some fine saves to keep the score line down to two. Chris Frost produced a fine shot on the left wing giving the goalie no chance, as it looped into the top hand corner. Jacob Knight scored a fine goal, placing it in the corner after a fine pass from Lewys Sweet. The last game was against Grangetown Clarets which the Blues won 3-0. The goalkeeper made some great saves and the Blues also hit the post and bar! Owen Jones opened up the scoring with a great goal after Matt Yeung had laid off the ball. Owen then popped up in the second half to make it 2-0. The last goal day was a brilliant team effort, Jacob Knight got the ball in defence after a great tackle, and passed to Chris Frost, who then passed to Adam Thomas who then promptly made the perfect pass to Kieran Harris, who took the ball in his stride and place it in the corner to make it 3-0. Great team effort , well done boys.
14th October 2006:-
Ditto….2 wins and a draw for the Thornhill Blues! The Blues won the first game 1-0,after yet another tight game with Danesourt, with a first half goal from Owen Jones. Direct goal chances were slim all for all the teams all day. A slippery pitch and tyre marks all over the pitch making it difficult to control the ball. The second game was another close affair, with the Blues having some good passing moves but unable to have a clear chance on goal against the Maindy Whites and game ended a goal less draw. In the last game the Blues dominated against Canton and scored early on through Matt Yeung. The Canton team didn’t give up and in one of there very few attacks scored a goal. The Blues immediately went back on the attack and Owen Jones was given a lot of room to size up his shot and he then placed it in the corner to make it 2-1. No further goals as the Blues couldn’t get past the packed Canton defence.
30th September 2006:-
With dark skies looming over the Court Field, the games were lucky not to be affected by heavy down pours! The Blues started with a nil-nil draw against Rumney Blues on a sloping pitch! The Rumney team played some great soccer, passing well and have showed a lot improvement since last summer (well done boys). Both teams had chances to score but without causing either goalkeeper to make a serious save. Overall, a good game well done to everyone! Next up were Pentrych Rangers Red, which the Blues won 5-0 nil with goals from Chris Frost, Owen Jones, Ben Hooper, Lewys Sweet and Jacob Knight. A scrappy affair with some passing! The Blues then played the hosts Lisvane Panthers Red. A new team this year who had some good performances but the Blues saved their best performance for the last match of the day. Exploding out of the blocks they scored early goals after some excellent passing by all the team. Owen Jones and Ben Hooper both bagged a pair each in the first half to be 4-0 up at half time. In the second the Reds had a number of long range shots on target, which were dealt with easily by Chris Frost. Owen Jones came back on for the last few and made an immediate impact finishing off Jacob Knight’s shot to get a hat-trick and he then set up Jac Skuse to make it 6-0. Well done boys some excellent team play!
23rd September 2006:-
The Blues started well against Lisvane Orange at Blackweir, with some fantastic passing and Matt Yeung opened the scoring with a brilliant shot! Owen Jones then scored a second to make it comfortable 2-0 win in the end. The Blues then played the Heath Park Rangers side, Jacob Knight opened up the scoring for the Blues after a well worked corner kick, tucking the ball away in the corner. Owen Jones then made it two nil, scoring a fantastic goal from long range, hitting the under side of the bar before it went in! The Blues didn’t add to their total because of some fantastic goal keeping from HPR. In the last game the Blues drew nil-nil against Marlborough Black, largely regarded as one of the strongest teams at this level. The Blues competed well and a draw was a fair reflection on the game. The game ebbed and flowed for 20mins with neither time having a real open opportunity to score! Well done to all the boys a great game!!!
16th September 2006:-
A six goal thriller for the Blues in their first official game of the year at Llanishen Park. The Blues went three nil up against the Maindy Reds with two goals from Jacob Knight and one from Ben Hooper. The Reds then dominated the rest of the game and got a cracker of a goal before the end of the first half. They then continued to pressurize the Blues goal and slotted home to two more in the second half to bring the scores level at 3-3. In second game against Grangetown, the Blues ended up comfortable winners 3 Nil after some end to end play, with goals from Owen Jones, Lewys Sweet and Sam Fenton. The Blues then went on to win their last game of the day 4-0 against Marlborough White’s with goals coming from Lewys Sweet, Owen Jones, Ben Hooper and Alex Woodman.
Thornhill Tournament 10th September 2006:-
A sunny day and with all the teams playing 5 games a piece, meant the boys had a good warm up before the seasons starts. The Thornhill Blues team was split into two teams Aqua and Blue and they were joined by the ever improving Thornhill Whites, Cwrt Rawlin, Llanishen Dons, Pentrych Rangers and the two Lisvane teams Orange and Black. The Blues started well defeating the Oranges two nil with both goals coming from Chris Frost, in the next game they lost one nil to the Dons who won all their group games. The Whites finished second in the group after beating the Oranges and defeating the Blues 1-0. Well done Whites, showing that all your hard work is paying off. In the other group the Aqua started with a nil-nil draw against Pentrych, and then lost to a very good Cwrt Rawlin (who won all their games) side two - nil but then finished second in the group after beating Lisvane Black 2 -1, after two excellent goals from Owen Jones. The Blues then beat Pentrcyh 1-0, a great long range shot from Jac Skuse but then lost to the Lisvane Blacks 1-0. Aqua drew 0-0 against the Whites, and then lost 1-0 to the Dons. The Whites also lost their final game against Cwrt Rawlin. Cwrt Rawlin and Llanishen Dons remained undefeated for the day, drawing the last game 1-1 in a great game.
